Blue Door CEO Debbie Schatia joined Glyn Perkins on 105.9 The Region to discuss the growing need for year-round emergency housing and support services in York Region, particularly during periods of extreme summer heat.
During the interview, Debbie highlighted that homelessness is not just a winter issue. Blue Door’s emergency housing programs operate year-round, providing individuals experiencing homelessness with a safe, air-conditioned place to stay, nutritious meals, and connections to housing and support services. She shared that Blue Door is currently providing 65 emergency beds each night, with programs operating at full capacity.
Debbie also emphasized that Blue Door’s work goes beyond emergency shelter by addressing the root causes of homelessness through housing support and wraparound services. She explained that individuals experiencing homelessness come from all walks of life, including youth, families, adults, and seniors, with factors such as job loss, rising living costs, fixed incomes, mental health challenges, and trauma all contributing to housing instability.
When asked how the community can help, Debbie encouraged residents to support Blue Door through volunteering and donations, and to connect individuals experiencing homelessness with the appropriate services. She noted that if Blue Door is not the right resource, the organization will help connect individuals with the supports they need.
The interview reinforced the importance of ensuring vulnerable individuals have access to safe shelter and essential supports throughout the year, especially during periods of extreme weather.
