More teams needed to take part in Dec. 13 event in Newmarket that raises funds for local homelessness charities
Hockey Helps the Homeless is looking for teams to take to the ice and raise money for a good cause.
Organizers are putting a call out ahead of the upcoming event at Newmarket’s Magna Centre Dec. 13. The annual event raises funding for homelessness charities, with the York Region version dedicated to Blue Door and 360°kids.
Manager of hockey operations David Dionne said they are still looking to gather more teams willing to participate in the event, with only 11 of 18 slots confirmed.
“It’s a good way to get involved for a good cause,” Dionne said. “We’re using Canada’s game and using its popularity to raise awareness of the most vulnerable in our communities.”
The annual event has raised hundreds of thousands for local homeless charities in recent years. Last year, more than $270,000 was raised locally for the beneficiaries.
Businesses, organizations and individuals participate in the event, raising money for the cause. That gets them the chance to play on teams for a day of hockey fun, with various pro celebrities also taking part alongside them.
“A great way to get out there, raise money for a great fund and have an unbelievable experience,” Dionne said, adding that participants will be “treated like a pro for all your hard work and contribution.”
Although spots are getting filled, Dionne said they are still hoping to find more teams to get involved.
“We just want to raise as much money as possible,” Dionne said. “They should be signing up so they can be a part of a greater cause … to raise awareness for the most vulnerable in our communities.”
