The walk will raise money for Blue Door and its Out of the Cold program
After a two-year hiatus, the Blue Door Shelter’s Coldest Night of the Year is back in 2023.
Blue Door will be hosting the event at the Toronto Montessori School in Richmond Hill starting at 4 p.m. Feb. 25.
“While the government continues to play a big part in preventing and ending homelessness, so does our community,” Blue Door CEO Michael Braithwaite said. “An easy and fun way to be part of the solution is to take part in the national Coldest Night of the Year event in Richmond Hill, benefiting Blue Door and the thousands of our region’s vulnerable we support each year. Let’s show the amazing strength of our community through this fun and impactful event.”
In York Region, homelessness is often hidden and out of sight. However, on any given night there are approximately 500 of our community members sleeping in tents or cars, couch surfing or on the streets — 500 people without a safe place to call home at night.
Individuals experiencing homelessness have been disproportionately impacted over the last few years as a result of the pandemic.

Braithwaite said now more than ever, the most vulnerable are experiencing the impact of the last two years of COVID-19, the rising costs of the living crisis and the recession on the horizon.
