Blue Door is celebrating five years of INNclusion, a transitional supportive housing program for 2SLGBTQI+ youth in York Region, this Pride Month.

Since opening in March 2021, INNclusion continues to provide safe, affirming housing for up to five 2SLGBTQI+ youth aged 16 to 29 who are facing homelessness due to barriers such as financial hardship, family breakdown, employment challenges and other complex life circumstances.

“Blue Door is proud to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the INNclusion program. We know that young people who identify as 2SLGBTQI+ are largely overrepresented among individuals experiencing homelessness,” Blue Door CEO Debbie Schatia said. “INNclusion provides a safe, affirming home where young people can build a community that supports them to transition to long-term stable housing.”

After 5 years, INNclusion has provided 6,797 nights of safety to youth experiencing the risks of homelessness. Participants have achieved significant personal milestones including completing high school, attending college and completing Blue Door’s construct program.

“Programs like INNclusion are life-changing because they provide more than just housing, they offer safety, belonging, and affirmation.” INNclusion peer youth mentor Francesca Loffreda said. “INNclusion creates a space where young people can be their authentic selves, build confidence, and feel empowered to achieve their goals and create the future they deserve.”

Jaime, a youth peer program participant at INNclusion said the experience has been very helpful.

“INNclusion is an inclusive environment that helps me feel safe and relaxed,” Jaime said. “Therefore, I can complete more goals in my life including doing the Construct program and support with name and gender marker change.”
