In the summer, the provincial government approved the project by granting a minister’s zoning order (MZ0), which allows Blue Door to build 14 stacked townhouses at 835 Gorham St.
At the moment, Kevin’s Place is a 100-year-old single-family home that acts as a shelter generally for male youth aged 16 to 26. But the facility was never designed to serve youth experiencing homelessness and the house only takes up 30 per cent of the property, which can be better utilized, Blue Door CEO Michael Braithwaite said.
The townhouses will provide affordable and accessible housing, aimed at transitioning individuals and families into more permanent housing, he said.
In addition to continuing to offer emergency housing on-site, the townhouses will include a mix of two- and three-bedrooms and fully accessible ground-level units for individuals and families of all ages and abilities.
