Pride Month milestone highlights nearly 6,800 nights of safe housing for vulnerable young people in York Region
As Pride Month celebrations continue across York Region, Blue Door is marking five years of its INNclusion program, a first-of-its-kind transitional housing initiative supporting 2SLGBTQI+ youth facing homelessness.
Launched in March 2021, INNclusion provides safe, affirming housing for up to five youth between the ages of 16 and 29. The program was created in response to the disproportionate number of 2SLGBTQI+ youth experiencing homelessness, often as a result of family rejection, financial hardship, discrimination, and other complex life circumstances.
Although only four per cent of Canadians identify as 2SLGBTQI+, they account for 13 per cent of the country’s homeless population, according to Blue Door.
“Blue Door is proud to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the INNclusion program,” said Debbie Schatia, chief executive officer of Blue Door, in a release. “INNclusion provides a safe, affirming home where young people can build a community that supports them to transition to long-term stable housing. The program’s outcomes demonstrate the difference inclusion makes in successful futures for young people who identify as 2SLGBTQI+.”
Since opening its doors, the program has provided 6,797 nights of safety and stability for youth experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
Participants have gone on to complete high school, attend college, graduate from Blue Door’s Construct skilled trades program, obtain driver’s licences, secure employment, and complete legal name and gender marker changes.
“Programs like INNclusion are life-changing because they provide more than just housing — they offer safety, belonging, and affirmation,” said Francesca Loffreda, peer youth mentor with INNclusion. “As the only transitional housing program dedicated to 2SLGBTQI+ youth in York Region, INNclusion creates a space where young people can be their authentic selves, build confidence, and feel empowered to achieve their goals and create the future they deserve.”
Beyond housing, the program offers wraparound support including life-skills training, education and employment assistance, financial planning, housing search support, healthcare access and community connections.
For participants, the impact can be transformative.
“INNclusion is an inclusive environment that helps me feel safe and relaxed,” said Jaime, a youth participant in the program. “Therefore, I can complete more goals in my life including doing the Construct program and support with name and gender marker change.”
Blue Door also acknowledged the support of partners including Kenvue Canada, the Regional Municipality of York, and The Home Depot Canada Foundation for helping sustain the program over the past five years.
As part of Pride Month, Blue Door recently participated in the York Region Police Pride We Belong Breakfast and the York Region Pride Parade, and will continue celebrations at North Durham Pride on June 20 and Toronto Pride on June 28.
