Skilled trades training initiative aims to equip vulnerable Canadians with jobs and confidence

Blue Door is taking its award-winning Aurora-based Construct program nationwide. Launched in 2020, Construct equips vulnerable individuals with hands-on training, wraparound supports, and on-the-job experience to launch careers in the skilled trades.

Now officially branded Construct Canada, the program will allow community organizations across the country to adopt the model — either through individual online courses or full pre-apprenticeship training, complete with curriculum, partnerships, and coaching support.

“Partnering with the Construct team to launch the program was seamless,” said Paul Robertson, executive director of Employment Help Centre. “The program’s flexibility enables us to tailor its delivery to meet the unique needs of our participants, while building local partnerships that further benefit clients.”

Participants gain practical experience in carpentry, drywall, painting, and more, while receiving essential support, including training wages, transportation, child care, food assistance, and access to mental health resources. Over five years, more than 800 people have gone through Construct, with 87 per cent completing the program and 73 per cent securing employment — 80 per cent of those in the trades.

The nonprofit organization says Construct addresses pressing societal challenges: labour shortages, housing instability, and barriers to long-term employment. By providing skills, confidence, and stable incomes, the program strengthens communities and fosters inclusive economic growth.

“From a coffee-table idea to an award-winning national model, Construct has proven it can create real, lasting change,” Michael Scarano, Blue Door board chair said previously. “Now, we’re ready to share that model across Canada, opening doors for people and communities alike.”

Construct Canada is also funded by the Future Skills Centre through the Government of Canada’s Future Skills Program and the Pathy Family Foundation.
